ISO, the International Organization for Standardization

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world’s largest developer of voluntary International Standards. International Standards give state of the art specifications for products, services and good practice, helping to make industry more efficient and effective. Developed through global consensus, they help to break down barriers to international trade.

What we do

iso-tuv-markISO develops International Standards. We were founded in 1947, and since then have published more than 19 000 International Standards covering almost all aspects of technology and business. From food safety to computers, and agriculture to healthcare, ISO International Standards impact all our lives.

Story of ISO

The ISO story began in 1946 when delegates from 25 countries met at the Institute of Civil Engineers in London and decided to create a new international organization ‘to facilitate the international coordination and unification of industrial standards’. In February 1947 the new organisation, ISO, officially began operations.
Since then,we have published over 19 000 International Standards covering almost all aspects of technology and manufacturing.
Today we have members from 164 countries and 3 335 technical bodies to take care of standard development. More than 150 people work full time for ISO’s Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland.

Who develops ISO standards?

ISO standards are developed by groups of experts, within technical committees (TCs). TCs are made up of representatives of industry, NGOs, governments and other stakeholders, who are put forward by ISO’s members. Each TC deals with a different subject, for example there are TCs focusing on screw threads, shipping technology, food products and many, many more.
ISO has over 250 technical committees. Details of the technical committees and links to the secretariat and chairman contact details can be found in the list of technical committees.
Searching the list of technical committees is one way to find out which subjects or sectors are the focus of ISO’s technical work.
ISO’s full members (member bodies) can decide if they would like to be a participating member (P-member) of a particular TC or an observing member (O-member). P-members participate actively in the work and have an obligation to vote on all questions submitted to vote within the technical committee. O-members follow the work as an observer but cannot make any comments about the development process or vote. Correspondent members can become O-members of a particular technical committee.

BSP British Standard Pipe

The British Standard Pipe (BSP) is a family of standard screw thread types that has been adopted internationally for interconnecting and sealing pipe ends by mating an external (male) with an internal (female) thread.

Two types of threads are distinguished:

  • BSPT: British Standard Pipe Taper -also known as “R” or “Rc” threads
  • BSPP: British Standard Pipe Parallel -also known as “G” or “Rp” threads
Parallel (‘straight’) threads, British Standard Pipe Parallel thread (BSPP; originally also known as British Standard Pipe Fitting thread/BSPF and British Standard Pipe Mechanical thread/BSPM), which have a constant diameter; denoted by the letter G.
Taper threads, British Standard Pipe Taper thread (BSPT), whose diameter increases or decreases along the length of the thread; denoted by the letter R.

These can be combined into two types of joints:

Jointing threads: These are pipe threads where pressure-tightness is made through the mating of two threads together. They always use a taper male thread, but can have either parallel or taper female threads. (In Europe, taper female pipe threads are not commonly used.)
Long screw threads: These are parallel pipe threads used where a pressure-tight joint is achieved by the compression of a soft material (such as an o-ring seal or a washer) between the end face of the male thread and a socket or nipple face, with the tightening of a back nut.

Thread form

the thread form follows the British Standard Whitworth standard
symmetrical V-thread in which the angle between the flanks is 55° (measured in an axial plane)
one-sixth of this sharp V is truncated at the top and the bottom
the threads are rounded equally at crests and roots by circular arcs ending tangentially with the flanks
the theoretical depth of the thread is therefore 0.64 times the nominal pitch.

Pipe thread designations

These standard pipe threads are formally referred to by the following sequence of blocks:
the words “Pipe thread”,
the document number of the standard (e.g., “ISO 7″ or “EN 10226″)
the symbol for the pipe thread type:
G = external + internal parallel (ISO 228)
R = external taper (ISO 7)
Rp = internal parallel (ISO 7/1)
Rc = internal taper (ISO 7)
Rs = external parallel

the thread size

Threads are normally right-hand. For left-hand threads, the letters “LH” are appended.
Example: Pipe thread EN 10226 Rp 2½
The terminology for the use of G and R originated from Germany (G for gas, as it was originally designed for use on gas pipes; R for rohr (meaning pipe).)

What is the manufacturing process of ASTM A234 WPB pipe fittings?

The WPB is not short hand for any process. It is simply an identifier developed by ASTM. The fittings in question are manufactured in the same manner as the companion pipe for this specification.
ASTM A234 WPB pipe fittings
ASTM A234 WPB pipe fittings
In very large sizes, the fittings may be manufactured in pieces and welded together as is the case for many large fittings.
The term used for the manufacturing is called “wrought” which means it is worked as opposed to being cast or forged.
As to the W standing for weldable, I’m not sure that is correct since that are many, many pipe fittings that are weldable but carry designations other than a W. Note the reference below.
Forging is the manufacturing process of ASTM A234 WPB pipe fittings.
W = WELDABLE / wrought
P = RELATED TO P NUMBER OF ALLOY MATERIAL
B = REFER TO MINIMUM YIELD OF MATERIAL

LATEST STANDARD IS:

ASTM A234/A234M-07
Standard Specification for Piping Fittings of Wrought Carbon Steel and Alloy Steel for Moderate and High Temperature Service
This standard covers wrought carbon steel fittings of seamless and welded construction which are manufactured to the dimensional specifications of ASME B16.9 and B16.28. These fittings are primarily for use in pressure piping and in pressure vessel fabrication for service at moderate and elevated temperatures.

ANSI/ASME B16.25, Buttwelding Ends

ANSI/ASME B16.25 Standard covers the preparation of butt welding ends of piping components to be joined into a piping system by welding. It includes requirements forwelding bevels, for external and internal shaping of heavy-wall components, and for preparation of internal ends (including dimensions and tolerances).
Coverage includes preparation for joints with the following:
(a) no backing rings
(b) split or noncontinuous backing rings
(c) solid or continuous backing rings
(d) consumable insert rings
(e) gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) of the root pass Details of preparation for any backing ring must be specified when ordering the component.
ANSI/ASME B16.25 Standard applies to any metallic materials for which a welding procedure can be satisfactorily qualified, but does not prescribe specific welding processes or procedures. Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, it does not apply towelding ends conforming to ASME B16.5, B16.9, or B16.47.

ANSI Flange Standards

The American National Standard Institute, ANSI, has been overseeing guidelines and standards for products manufactured through several sectors. ANSI-approved flanges are used for the industrial market which handles gas, air and steam process systems.
ANSI Series A Blind Flange
Series A 150 & 300 Blind Flange
Series A 400, 600 & 900 Blind Flange
Series A 400, 600 & 900 Blind Flange
ANSI Series A Weld Neck Flange
ANSI Series A Weld Neck Flange
Series A 400, 600 & 900 Weld Neck Flange
Series A 400, 600 & 900 Weld Neck Flange

Purpose

Flanges are used to attach a series of pipes or other flanges together. Some flanges, such as in the oil and gas sector, are required to sustain under high amounts of pressure. ASNI provides standards to flange manufactures to test flanges before they can be marketed to a particular sector.

Significance

ANSI provides standards on flanges depending upon pressure in pounds per second per inch (PSI), according to size in inches of the flange. Pressure and size are dependent upon whether the flange is welded to the pipe, threaded or bolted.

Considerations

Depending on the material the flange is made from, such as cast iron or steel, and the type of threaded material used for fittings, every flange is designated to a particular class. From these class ratings, several requirements, such as pressure-temperature rating, bolt and nut dimensions, coating material and several other factors, make up the standards according to the flange characteristics.

Usage:
Petroleum, Chemical, Power, Gas, Metallurgy, Ship-building, Construction, ect.
Stub Ends are fittings used in place of welded flanges where rotating back up flanges are desired. They are also called Lap Joints and Vanstone Flared Laps. A rotating back up flange seats itself against the back surface of the Stub End. When bolts are added, the clamping action of the bolts presses the rotating back up flange against the back of the Stub End. The gasket surface of the Stub End then presses against a gasket and another gasket surface providing joints like standard flange joints. The seal is made by the gasket surface of the stub end alone, the flange only provides the clamping pressure on the joint.

Our high quality stub ends (Butt weld fittings ) are tested and verified for durability, accuracy and precision. The stub ends are manufactured in all standard dimensions. The stub ends are provided with a standard weld bevel and can be available in squared, flanged, victaulic and threaded ends. We offer stub ends at highly competitive prices.
